Five benefits of using self-watering planters!

What do self-watering planters do?

Self-watering pots use a reservoir to water your plants right at the roots. These planters are kid-friendly and easy to use, it’s no wonder they are so popular!

Coming from a family of farmers, I never had a problem keeping my plants alive and healthy. Whether I had indoor plants, an indoor herb garden, or outdoor plants, my natural green thumb has always helped me maintain my garden very well. I was shocked to see how many of my friends and co-workers found it difficult to keep their plants alive.

I went to have dinner at a friend’s house one evening, and she mentioned how she tried to grow her basil and parsley to use in her cooking. As many Italian moms know, basil and parsley are two of the most used seasonings in their recipes, (aside from garlic of course). When she mentioned that she went through three basil plants and could not keep them alive, I almost couldn’t believe it! I guess some people do need a little extra help to grow their herb garden at home.

This threw me into a deep rabbit hole of at-home grow kits and herb garden boxes. When I stumbled upon self-watering pots, I knew I had the solution for my friend and others who are not fortunate to have a good green thumb. You may be wondering, what is a self-watering pot? Self-watering pots have a small built-in ‘reservoir’ located below the soil that allows the roots of your plant to expand below the soil and into the water. This will give roots direct access to the water they need regularly. Your plants will get just the right amount of water they need to survive.

All you need to do is make sure your reservoir is full, your plant will do the rest!

Do self-watering pots really work?

Absolutely! Self-watering planters are a great way to grow many indoor plants and vegetables. Self-watering pots are also extremely helpful in helping your outdoor plants grow strong roots before they are planted in the ground. It will not only save you time, but it will also prevent overwatering!

What are the 5 benefits of using self-watering pots in your home garden?

  1. Saves Water - Self-watering pots not only prevent overwatering or underwatering your plant, but it also helps reduce the amount of water that evaporates from the soil. The reservoir that holds the water in the pot is located below the soil, which prevents evaporation. It’s also a great way to make sure your plants are well cared for while you are on vacation!

  2. Saves Time - In today’s world time is everything. Most people find it difficult to spare a few minutes out of their day to relax or do things they enjoy. Starting a new gardening hobby may interest you, however, your busy schedule may be preventing you from taking on this new venture. Utilizing a self-watering pot will allow you to practice the art of growing your vegetables, herbs, and plants without taking up too much time out of your daily schedule. Seems like a win-win to me!

  3. Helps Grow Healthy Roots - Self-watering pots are perfect for growing indoor plants at home. They are also a great way to get your bigger plants started before you transport them into the ground. Since the reservoir is filled with water, the roots can grow down and out of the soil to the water, leaving your plant with a strong and healthy root system. As you probably already know, strong roots will lead to a strong and healthy plant!

  4. Soil Retains Nutrients - Exposing your plants to nutrient-rich soil is a great way to ensure they grow strong and healthy. Self-watering planters allow the nutrients to remain trapped in the soil, providing a perfect environment for your plants to grow! The water section of the planter is enclosed, preventing nutrients from getting washed away like it would in a regular pot.

  5. Reduces Diseases and Mold - If you have been forced to throw away a plant due to mildew or mold, then a self-watering planter is for you! Having your plant watered from the roots directly prevents the stem and leaves from being exposed to moisture, preventing the potential buildup of diseases like mold and mildew. Self-watering pots are a great way to water your plants without the risk of disease!

The benefits of self-watering pots make taking on a new gardening hobby much easier and more convenient. Whether you are like my Italian friend who wants to grow their herbs at home, or you just want to add some live plants to your home decor, self-watering pots can help.
