4 Tips for Beginner Gardeners

Many people today are beginning to grow their own microgreens, vegetables and plants. The gardening trend is not going anywhere anytime soon. That being said, why not try gardening yourself? It’s how our parents, and grandparents fed themselves for longer than we can imagine. Not to mention that someone somewhere is growing their own food while others click a few buttons on Uber Eats because welcome to convenience culture.

Hey, I’m not judging. I support it, but sometimes it’s nice to know that what you’re cooking up at home came from the backyard (or the patio), and not from who knows where.

But if you are sitting there pondering:

  • How to start a garden?

  • How much will it cost to grow my own vegetables?

  • How much time will it take?

  • What if I don’t have the space for a garden?

Well then, you’ve clicked on the right article.

Here are 4 easy beginner gardening tips to starting your own garden today, even if you’ve never gotten your hands dirty (in soil that is).

  1. Get yourself some seeds. Yes, quality matters. Here is a great place to get seeds for your garden: True Leaf. Start small with a few herb seeds, or test your skills with a bunch of vegetable seeds to start growing your own food.

  2. Check the quality of the soil before planting. This is huge. Nothing can grow if the soil is dead, which one would think is obvious but we are beginners here so we start at the very bottom with this. If you find that your soil is too acidic or too alkaline and you need to lower/raise the pH, here is a great resource to use to help!

  3. Start small! Look, you’re going to go from Door Dash delivery queen to Martha Stewart overnight. Take it slow. Create an indoor garden first on your windowsill. Grow one or two things that are the simplest, like radishes, herbs, or peppers. Have a few pots on your patio, but don’t overdo it. You’ll waste a lot of money if it all flops the first few times. Research a few things about what it takes to grow a successful garden. Your Backyard Herb Garden is a great book to use as a resource! You can also check out our at home Grow Kit, which includes gardening instructions, starter pots, a self-watering pot, soil, a convenient way to make gardening for beginners easy! It’s a great way to get started on your own garden.

  4. Get yourself a Seeding Square by Fresh Earth Bistro. Seeding Square is inspired from the popular Square Foot Gardening method, where seeds are sown in specific positions within a square foot, allowing enough room for each seed to grow to maturity without wasting space. This is great if you’re tight on space, but want to start without spending a ton of money.

Whatever way you choose to go when starting a garden, remember to start small, research your options, and of course, to have fun!
