The problem with today’s food distribution network and supply chain

Supply and demand run this country. Well really, every country because hello, capitalism. Demand for a product(s) comes in, supply increases and round goes the merry-go-round. But what happens when the supply chain is interrupted but the demand doesn’t change? It’s more obvious than you think, the ports where goods are coming into are backed up, and therefore, instead of taking a week to clear and remove products, now it takes two to three weeks. This is one of the main issue food production networks face today, the inability for food supplies to meet the demand.

Another problem with food distribution in America is staffing issues. In fact, we have seen an increase in this food supply issue more recently thanks to COVID-19. In other words, dock workers are in short supply due to layoffs from Covid restrictions and budget cuts. The COVID protocols at the ports are still in effect creating even more delays. What does this mean for food distribution? To put it simply, we have increased labor hours for overworked and understaffed ports which in turn, create more delays in the food distribution network. This is just one stop. Those goods now need to reach a warehouse and then be distributed to stores across each state/county, now you can see why it’s so important to teach the population, especially children, how to grow their own food!

Support small businesses and shop at your local farmer’s market the next time you buy produce!

So, what's the biggest way to combat the problems with modern day food distribution? I don’t believe it’s one simple fix, but one of the best ways is to shop locally! Buy from mom-and-pop shops that are sourcing their materials/items/foods from local distributors, therefore, eradicating a delay in production and shipment. Shopping locally also creates a demand for local jobs, which in turn, helps with the supply chain and food distribution networks. And let’s not forget the reduction in carbon footprint, which is a win for the environment, too!

Another great way to avoid shipping delays and distribution network issues is to grow your own food! Learning how to garden is not only a great way to provide healthy meals for your family, but it will also give you direct access to organic and healthy produce. We know how busy life can get, that is why we offer home grow kits for beginners that are looking to develop a new gardening skill. We also have created kids gardening activity books that will teach children how to garden and grow their own vegetables in a fun and engaging way.

It’s time to make a change, learn a new hobby, and create a better future our children.
